Slade

I was skeptical that Katie knew what she was in for, but she was adamant that she wanted to stay. I wasn’t even going to stay the whole night, but I’d wanted to relieve Lance for a few hours. “Okay. Lance, you’re welcome to catch some sleep.”

He rose and nodded. “I’ll be in the tack room if you need me.”

He left, and I wondered why I'd dismissed him. I was playing with fire being alone with Katie. "You might as well snag a hay bale and have a seat."

I closed the gate after I entered the stall.

“I can’t go in there?”

“You aren’t familiar to the cow, Katie. It’s best if you stay out there. She could do a lot of damage if she gets riled.”

Katie nodded and then settled on a hay bale she found. “Okay.”

"You're welcome to sleep. I have an eye on her at this point."

"If I do, you'll wake me if it happens?"

“I will.”

She didn't lay down, and I had to admire her determination. She'd was a city girl, but she wasn't appearing squeamish as to what could happen. The cow shuffled around, then let out a loud moo.

When I looked at Katie, she smiled at the animal. The cows trusted me even if they must have known I wasn't human. We'd developed a relationship over the time I'd had them.

“You inseminate them to get more cattle?”

“It’s the easiest way,” I said. “They are a sustainable crop in some ways.”

She nodded. “Makes sense.”

“We only have the best cows have babies,” I said.

I wanted her to know even more about my ranch. She seemed interested, and I was willing to talk to her. It was a safe subject. I didn't want to talk about the almost kiss in the smaller barn. I tried to forget that I'd had that urge, but now Katie was here. I couldn't chase her away. I didn't want to chase her away, which was the problem.

“Improve the stock?”

"Exactly. We have a reputation in the short time I've been a rancher. So I want to keep that going," Slade said.

As we spoke, my wolf kept trying to make an appearance. I couldn't let it. Katie would run away screaming if she knew what I was. That was one of many reasons I couldn't pursue anything with her. I added that to the list.

“I see,” she nodded and seemed to be taking that in.

She yawned.

“You don’t have to stay,” I said.

She shook her head. "I wouldn't miss this. Besides, the more I know about your business, the more I can help you."

I couldn't argue with her reasoning, and waiting for a calf to be born showed a tremendous amount of commitment. The cow let out a noise. When I checked, a head was sticking out of her. I grinned at Katie. "It's about to happen."

Katie bounced on the hay, and I couldn't help being infected by her enthusiasm.
